The Origins of Bokator

Bokator is one of the oldest fighting systems in Southeast Asia, with roots tracing back over 1,000 years to the Angkor Empire. The name itself translates to 'lion pounding' — a reference to the legendary warrior who defeated a lion with bare hands.

Animal Forms

Bokator features 341 distinct techniques modeled after animal movements: the elephant, lion, crab, horse, bird, and many more. Each form carries deep philosophical meaning tied to Khmer cosmology.

Survival and Revival

Nearly lost during the Khmer Rouge era, Bokator has been painstakingly revived by dedicated masters. Today it is recognized as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
